Sometimes I think that I have seen all the cool things I will ever see. There won’t be another Buffy or Veronica Mars. There will never be another The Rock. I will never play another game that I love as much as I once loved Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2. There will still be stuff that comes out that I like, of course, but sometimes I just think I’ve seen the best of the best and nothing will ever be as good. Part of it is that a lot of these things I was not only experiencing something awesome, but experiencing them for the first time so their amazingness was magnified. (Kind of like sex, but the opposite.)
Now, I read a lot of blogs. A lot. I currently have 116 subscriptions in my Google Reader. Lately, a name has been popping up in a lot of them. Scott Pilgrim. It turns out Scott Pilgrim is a comic book. Or rather a graphic novel. Or something. It’s not sold issue to issue. It’s sold in volumes. (Which is so much better than issues it’s not even funny, I don’t know why all comics aren’t just like this. They aren’t long enough to be month to month.) I don’t have anything against comics. I read Buffy and Angel every month. Y: The Last Man is one of the coolest things I’ve ever read. I grew up on X-Men. Etc. Etc. So I decided to give the first volume a shot.
AND IT BLEW MY MIND.
After reading the first volume I became INSTANTLY excited for the Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead) directed, Michael Cera (Michael Cera!) starring adaptation, Scott Pilgrim vs The World. Then I flew through the next four volumes, loving each on more than the last. There is still one left to go and I don’t think it comes out for like six months or something, which sucks big time. But I know it’s going to be worth the wait. I don’t normally like to get crazy about movies that I haven’t seen a second of footage of, but I’m pretty sure that Scott Pilgrim vs The World is going to be my favorite movie of all time. No joke.
