The A’s are closing in on a deal that would send star outfielder Matt Holiday from Colorado to Oakland, SI.com has learned. It isn’t known yet which players will be sent to Oakland in the surprise deal.
All offseason long people have been saying that the A’s were looking for a bat along the lines of Frank Thomas. Many have speculated that it would be Jason Giambi, and it still could be, but nobody saw ANYTHING like this coming. Why shouldn’t it though? Beane sees an opportunity and he takes it. Holliday is one of the best defensive LF in all of baseball and has a career 131 OPS+. He’s good and he’s all but guaranteed to be a Type A free agent next summer meaning two draft picks coming back to the A’s. Seeing as they have one of the most stacked farm systems in all of baseball, they can afford to make this move.
The West could be wide open next year (to everyone but the Mariners, of course) and the A’s look to be making their move. I’m not betting against them.
