Adrian Beltre and 2009

I haven’t wrote about the Mariners in awhile because there really isn’t much left to say. Once the season is over and we can start building for 2009 I’ll have something to say. This post on Adrian Beltre at USSM got me thinking though. The idea is the ownership group, the woefully inept Howard Lincoln and company, think that we need a “Cleveland style” rebuilding and trading Beltre seems inevitable. I agree with the USSM guys that this is the wrong move and it would be best to attempt to extend him. I don’t think a Cleveland style rebuilding is necessary at all with a few moves (all on the offense) this team could contend next year. If they didn’t want to do that they could start a rebuilding process and NOT be terrible (as in Tui at 3B, Wlad in CF, LaHair at 1B) by picking up some more qualified minor league FAs. I realize this team needs to rebuild, but just because Adrian Beltre is your best trading chip doesn’t mean you should trade him.

If they do, however, please trade him to the Brewers so I can continue to cheer for him in 2009.
