I never really did a post on this, but I always assumed that Ken Macha was the favorite. Compared to Brenly he seems like a lot better manager (although I sometimes wonder if a lot of his strategy was Beane ordered) and Randolph was likely just the token black candidate. Nothing against Randolph, but I think Melvin had his guy in mind the whole time and since he had to interview a minority due to league rules he chose Randolph. Looking up Macha on Wikipedia I found this funny:
After the dismissal, the Seattle Mariners offered Macha a position as bench coach to manager Mike Hargrove, but Macha refused, citing his desire to take a year off. He was then offered a position as a senior adviser to Mariners GM Bill Bavasi. But in April 2007, Macha accepted a part-time position as a pre- and post-game analyst for New England Sports Network, which telecasts Boston Red Sox games.
Macha turned down the Mariners. Twice. Is it weird that this makes me like him more? I’m sure the Brewers fans will probably end up hating him, it’s just the nature of people around here. Hate the manager of your baseball team, love Brett Favre, drink beer, lather, rinse, repeat. Too bad FireMacha is already taken.
