Man, I sure do love Mike Cameron. He’s everything I want in a player. Above average to great defense, hits for power, draws walks and has the ability to steal a base. He also wears his hat funny and looks cool in sunglasses. I wish I had an entire team of Mike Cameron.
So it kills me to say that the Brewers should probably trade him to the Yankees. I hate the Yankees so very much and will not root for him as long as he plays for them, and he might help them make the playoffs which would be terrible but it’s the right move. The Brewers need another bat at 3B and the free agent market for one is not there. I’ve always thought Betemit could have a big season if given the starts and a true platoon with Bill Hall could do a lot to replace Cameron’s bat. If they are going to trade Cameron, they could do a lot worse replacing him in CF than Melky Cabrera. According to Baseball Prospectus Cameron was 20 runs above replacement defensively in CF last season. Cabrera was 14. All that and a pitcher for a 36 year old on a one year deal. Sure, it probably won’t happen but the idea of getting a 23 year old plus defense CF with upside (comparable players at his age include Curt Flood and Johnny Damon) and a 27 year old 3B that mashes RHP is pretty exciting.
