Fun with Monster

I am the kind of guy who wants to work for himself in life. I could never see myself behind a desk at a corporation or in a cubicle. Anything like that. However, there is an exception to that rule and that would be working for either the Milwaukee Brewers or the Seattle Mariners.  That is something that I could get on board with. So every now and then I search Monster and MLB.com for job openings. Here’s what I found.

Pitch F/X Operator: I’ve never learned pitch recognition so this one is out, but that just sounds awesome. Both teams are hiring on this one.

Stats Stringer: Both teams are hiring on this one too. Basically it’s getting paid to keep score. According to this it’s for the website and you know what that means: fucking with people who are playing fantasy even if it’s just for a split second! Oh, did I just put in homerun instead of double? Sorry about that Mr. 5×5!

Advance scout: Seriously, the same job Billy Beane once held with the A’s. I doubt he was an intern paid $6.55/hr though.

Sports reporter: This is the one that makes me sad. Maybe if I started writing crisper on the site about the Brewers I could use that as my resume, but without that I’m probably screwed. It’s sad because I know that I know more about baseball than the teams have writing for their website, but maybe that’s a bad thing. Besides who has ever gone from website reporter to General Manager?

Goodbye Mike Cameron

Well it looks like Mike Cameron is on his way out. I’m going to miss him, but the trade looks good for the Brewers.

In probably the silliest thing I’ve read in a long time the Yankees want money from the Brewers. The Yankees. The same team that just blew everyone else out of the water by like 40 million on CC. The richest team in all of sports. I’m sorry guys, but that’s just not an option and I’m sure Mark A won’t sign off on it.

CC you in hell!

Seven years 160 million is what it took to make CC Sabathia a New York Yankee.

I’ve touched on this before, I realize that players ALWAYS take the most money. I don’t know how anyone could look at the Brewers offer and have it trumped by 2 years and 60 million and not take it. Even if the Brewers had added the 6th year that would have been leaving 20 million dollars on the table. He’s not crazy to take the money, the Yankees just suck.

All that being said, screw him. Let’s say he took the Brewers offer of 6y/120m on the condition that he gets an out clause (ala AJ Burnett) after two years. If he’s as good as he and everyone else thinks he is he could get out then and STILL make 120 million from the Yankees meaning an extra 20m in his pocket just for playing nice with Milwaukee. It’s all about the money, I KNOW, okay? I know that, but if you are going to break the record for biggest pitching contract no matter what wouldn’t you rather play with your friends? And not A-Rah? You would right? Wouldn’t you want to play in a smaller city where Mike Lupica isn’t employed? Wouldn’t you want to play in the National League instead of the toughest division in baseball? I don’t get it..

Man, I love the Brewers

Seriously, I love the Brewers. They are just so well marketed and they want all my money but they earn it by giving me stuff. I just got this email and I have absolutely no idea what this guy is talking about.

Dear Vincent,

Thank you for your group ticket purchase last season.

As you may already be aware, one of the benefits of purchasing group tickets is the ability to redeem a gift certificate for two free tickets to a future Brewers game. Due to limited ticket availability, we were unable to extend this offer during the second half of 2008.

The Milwaukee Brewers are committed to you as a group customer and are currently in the process of moving the gift certificates and the accompanying survey to a web based system. You will receive an offer via e-mail in early spring 2009, which will enable you to process your online gift certificate.

In order to keep your account current, please contact us with any e-mail address changes as this is the only way to ensure delivery of this item in the future.

We appreciate your patience and look forward to seeing you at Miller Park in 2009.

Sincerely,

Chris Barlow
Director – Group Sales
Milwaukee Brewers Baseball Club

I really don’t remember buying any tickets in bulk. I think one time I bought six at the box office with my credit card, but I don’t think I ever bought over four online. Anyways, who cares, two free tickets in 2008. To go along with the two free tickets I am possibly going to get for donating a $15 toy and the 20 game package I own. It’s going to be a very good year.

Arbitration

I know a lot about baseball, but arbitration confuses me. Instead of a player becoming a free agent he is given the option of going to court and having his play examined by a judge who then rewards him a contract commensurate to his performance? Something like that. Anyways when a player turns it down and signs with another team his original team is compensated with draft picks. Sometimes it’s one, sometimes it’s two depending on how valuable a player was at fantasy. (I heard last season the Mariners offered Jeff Weaver arbitration and they lost all their draft picks, but that’s just a rumor.) Anyways, here’s a roundup of the arbitration cases I care about.

The Mariners offered Raul Ibanez arbitration.
The Brewers offered CC Sabathia, Ben Sheets and Brian Shouse arbitration.

These are all good things. Raul Ibanez seems destined to misplay a fly ball in a playoff game at Wrigley Field and the Mariners will be compensated with two picks heading into their first draft under their newly hired draft guru. Exciting stuff.

The Brewers are a bit more interesting. Shouse is a pretty low risk gamble and Sabathia is a no brainer as it’s instantly two picks if (when) he leaves. Sheets is pretty interesting. The talk is that he is injured and teams are luke warm to him so he may come back, but doesn’t offering him arbitration say to the rest of baseball “we believe he’s healthy” as they know more about him than anyone else? Or is that what they want teams to think so they can go into this year’s draft with 5 first round picks? I still say he comes back, but it’s interesting to think about.
